I'm Pregnant and Nauseated
Nausea and vomiting occurs in about 70% of pregnancies and is usually worse in the first third of the pregnancy. However some pregnancies are complicated by severe nausea and vomiting associated with dehydtration and starvation ( only 2% of cases fall into this category). Most pregnant women can manage their nausea by choosing foods that are not spicy or fatty and by eating foods high in protein and keeping themselves well hydrated.  Avoiding smells that trigger nausea may also help. Keeping something in the stomach (like crakers) also helps.  Foods and beverages that contain ginger may help as well.  Before calling the office try Unisom (doxylamine) 1/2 tablet twice daily or a vitamin B6 tablet or both.  Over the counter Zantac 150 mg once or twice daily will help in some women. If you can't keep anything down including liquids, please call the office or doctor on call for our practice for instructions.  Nausea and vomiting associated with abdominal pain or vomiting blood. needs immediate attention. We will often prescribe stronger medications like promethazine (Phenergan), zofran, or reglan. In some cases hospitalization is necessary. On weekends and at night, the emergency room can provide help and even IV hydration.
